Summer School of Experimental Surgery 2020 successfully concluded
(July 18, 2020)The Summer School of Experimental Surgery, held by our lab's team every year for medical students from the whole world, took place at the Biomedical Center over the last two weeks. We're glad that we were able to organize SSES this year despite the global COVID-19 pandemic without many changes to the curriculum. The experimental sessions at the operating theaters were hard, but we're sure that the students have learnt a lot as the progress of their skills was evident. Thanks to the SSES crew as well as this year's students! And in case you had wanted to attend and missed it, keep an eye on the SSES homepage for details on next year's SSES, which are to be published there in early autumn.
Albert Schweitzer prize for two members of our lab
(July 17, 2020)The 26th annual prizes of the French embassy of the Czech Republic for young Czech scientists in postgraduate study programmes have been recently announced. The prizes were given in seven categories according to the scientific discipline of the nominees.
Two students from our team were awarded the Albert Schweitzer prize for medical research. Jachym Rosendorf, M.D., has been awarded 3rd place for his research „Experimental use of nanofibrous materials for prevention of intestinal anastomotic leakage“, and Richard Palek, M.D., has been awarded 2nd place for his work on „Perfusion decellularization of whole liver – first step in new organ development“. Both Jachym and Richard do their Ph.D. studies under the supervision of Assoc. Prof. Vaclav Liska, M.D., Ph.D., who is an Albert Schweitzer prize awardee himself from the year 2000. Both research projects were carried out at the Laboratory of Cancer Treatment and Tissue Regeneration of the Biomedical Center of the Faculty of Medicine in Pilsen, Charles University, Czech Republic.
The award ceremony was held on July 2nd at the facility of the French Institute in Prague in presence of the French ambassador Roland Galharague. Same as every ear, the opening speech was given by a chemistry nobelist Jean-Marie Lehn, however this time he was able to participate only via teleconference due to the global epidemiological situation. The financial award is accompanied by a one-month internship at a research facility in France for the first and the second prize awardees, which is sponsored by the Pierre-Fabre Medicament company.

More postdoc positions open at the Biomedical Center
(June 2, 2020)Postdoctoral positions in translational cancer research (molecular biologist, immunologist, bioinformatician).
For a European Union-funded project on translational cancer research, headed by Professor Kari Hemminki, several postdoctoral positions with different areas of expertize are currently sought to work in Biomedical Center, Faculty of Medicine, Charles University in Pilsen, Czech Republic. The focus will be initially on colorectal cancer. The aims are to assess genetic and cellular changes taking place in the progression of colorectal cancer from precursor tumors (adenomas) to single or multiple colorectal cancers and lastly to metastases.

UNCE Project Meeting "Jávorná Pilsen" 2020
(May 21, 2020)Because of the coronavirus pandemic, we were forced to cancel our traditional weekend project meeting at Javorná in the Šumava mountains and organize a smaller coordination meeting in Pilsen instead. The meeting took place last Saturday (May 16) at the Biomedical Center (with strict preventive and hygienic measures, of course). Even though we did miss Šumava's nature, we were happy to talk to one another face to face (or mask to mask) again and the meeting itself was quite fruitful. Summer School of Experimental Surgery 2020 Still to Be Held Despite the Pandemic
(April 23, 2020)In spite of the global coronavirus pandemic, we are still confident that we will be able to organize the Summer School of Experimental Surgery this July without major complications or safety concerns. We have several plans for changes to the curriculum or education methods, which will be applied based on the development of the situation. We hope that international travel will soon be enabled and as many of our students as possible will be able to arrive and participate. Up-to-date information and contacts are available through the SSES website and Facebook page.

Work of the Laboratory of Cancer Treatment and Tissue Regeneration and the Laboratory of Pharmacogenomics published in Scientific Reports
(February 2, 2020)The result of a successful cooperation of scientific and clinical teams of the Biomedical Center of the Faculty of Medicine in Pilsen, Charles University, is the publication of the article Protein expression of ABCC2 and SLC22A3 associates with prognosis of pancreatic adenocarcinoma in the journal Scientific Reports (Q1, IF2018: 4.116).
The article addresses associations between immunohistochemically assessed localization of drug transporters in pancreatic adenocarcinoma tumor cells and the prognosis of this tumor in patients. The paper is a result of a common effort of the teams of the Laboratory of Cancer Treatment and Tissue Regeneration and the Laboratory of Pharmacogenomics of the Biomedical Center of the Faculty of Medicine in Pilsen, Charles University, of the Department of Surgery and Department of Pathology, University Hospital Pilsen, and of the Department of Oncology, Faculty Hospital Olomouc. Lenka Červenková and Václav Liška participated in the work for the Laboratory of Cancer Treatment and Tissue Regeneration, and Pavel Souček for the Laboratory of Pharmacogenomics.

New experimental CT scanner has been ceremonially launched
(January 17, 2019)Thanks to the support of the European Regional Development Fund-Project „Application of Modern Technologies in Medicine and Industry” (No. CZ.02.1.01/0.0/0.0/17_048/0007280), we were able to equip our animal surgery facility with a new experimental CT scanner. This exquisite machine will enable us to harvest much more data from our experiments and having it at hand just a few steps from the operating theatre unlocks a whole new world of experimental projects we can now start working on. The CT scanner was ceremonially launched on January 10, 2020 (see photos in the gallery), however, we must admit that we had been too excited to wait and tried it already a couple times before that (and found it to be awesome).

Miroslav Jirik awarded for the LISA software
(December 2, 2019)Each year, the international biotechnology enterprise Roche distributes the Czech DIGI@MED Awards to authors of innovative digital and mobile solutions in medicine and healthcare process optimization. The goal of the award is to support young innovators in their bold endeavours in utilizing digital technologies for better clinical care, health and well-being. The contenders were evaluated by a panel of renowned healthcare and IT professionals, who considered not only the benefits that the solutions offer to clinicians and pharmacists, but mainly their positive effects for patients.
One of the 2019 awardees is Miroslav Jirik, PhD., our labmate from the Biomedical Center, Faculty of Medicine in Pilsen, Charles University and also from the NTIS Centre, Faculty of Applied Sciences, University of West Bohemia, who has utilized the results of a multidisciplinary team from these two institutions by creating the software application LISA (Liver Surgery Analyser). The LISA application serves as a platform for research of liver perfusion. 3D modelling of virtual liver resection, which is also included in LISA, then extends the possibilities of current clinical care for patients with liver cancer by allowing surgeries at the margin of operability to be performed. The software also facilitates the estimation of the regeneration potential of the remaining liver tissue after resection. This substantial achievement was made possible by combining the latest findings of both technical and biomedical research thanks to the collaboration between the universities.
Dr. Jirik focuses on machine learning and computer vision methods in the field of medical applications. He represents a key link between the Biomedical Center and the technically oriented researchers from the University of West Bohemia.
Another Czech DIGI@MED Award was presented to Marek Vosecký for his mobile application CF Hero, which helps young patients suffering from cystic fibrosis. An honourable mention for extraordinary achievement was addressed to the application Záchranka, which localizes the injured using GPS. The award ceremony took place on November 26, 2019, in Charles University’s Carolinum in Prague. Congratulations to the awardees!
The Chaperon ERA Chair holder selected
(November 27, 2019)A good news from the Chaperon ERA Chairs Horizon 2020 project that we participate in. The evaluation of the candidates for the ERA Chair holder position has been completed and we are pleased to announce the selection of our future Chair holder – the position will be taken by Prof. Kari Hemminki.
Kari Hemminki is a top-class researcher in the field of cancer epidemiology and cancer genomics, he is a professor emeritus of the German Cancer Research Center (Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum – DKFZ) in Heidelberg, where he led the Division of Cancer Epidemiology from 2003 to June 2019. Prof. Hemminki comes from Finland where he acquired the degrees of MD, PhD and Assistant professor at the University of Helsinki. He then continued his career in molecular biology during his postdoctoral fellowship at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD, USA. He has authored over 1250 papers with approx. 29 000 citations and his H-index is 79. Since his team at DKFZ comprised up to 30 people, for whom he managed to acquire more than 50% of external, i.e. grant funding, we are confident that prof. Hemminki will bring a crucial managerial know-how that will help increase the competitiveness of the Biomedical Center, but also of the whole faculty and university. We are looking forward to prof. Hemminki joining us at the beginning of 2020.

UNCE project meeting 2019
(November 26, 2019)The second annual meeting of our research project "Centrum of Clinical and Experimental Liver Surgery" (UNCE/MED/006) was held on Saturday, November 23, 2019. The members of our team as well as our colleagues from collaborating labs presented their results. We've also arranged the details on future collaboration. The meeting progressed in a relaxed and friendly way, free from the tight schedules of busy work days. Photos from the meeting are available in the gallery.
Innovating Pilsen 2019
(November 13, 2019)The second meeting of inventors in West Bohemia INOVUJEME PLZEŇ (Innovating Pilsen) was organized at DEPO2015 on the 6th November 2019. Inventors presented the latest developments in internet of things, drones and robotics alongside their possible applications for the improvement of the life quality in cities. Universities presented their faculties and institutes showing an overview of their research. Our lab contributed to the event by exposing the research on liver tissue engineering. Vladimira Moulisova with her student Maria Stefania Massaro were explaining the processes of decellularization and recellularization of pig liver with the vision of preparing functional liver grafts for transplantation. A poster presentation of the procedure was accompanied with samples of both the scaffold and the whole liver. A microscope was also available to let the visitors see the microstructure of the samples. A corrosion-cast model of liver vessels obtained through the collaboration with the University of West Bohemia and the Institute of Anatomy attracted many visitors. Miroslav Jirik, Richard Palek and Lenka Cervenkova were enthusiastically explaining its unusual appearance and purpose. The audience comprised school children and high school students as well as general public.
International cooperation in software liver modeling
(November 12, 2019)From November 4 to November 8 2019, the Biomedical Center of our Faculty hosted esteemed international visitors. Following up upon a long-term collaboration including one international grant funded from the Erasmus+ program, we had the honor to welcome two professors from Rome. Prof. Alberto Paoluzzi from Italian Roma Tre University and Prof. Antonio DiCarlo from CECAM-IT-SIMUL Node are specialized in the field of computational modeling and object representation. Their invited lectures “Finite Boolean Algebras for Solid Geometry Using Julia's Sparse Arrays” and “On the Gap between Solid Modeling and Physics-based Simulation” attracted the attention they deserved. They were also supplemented by a lecture of prof. Dr. Ing. Eduard Rohan, DSc., from the Faculty of Applied Sciences of the University of West Bohemia (called “Multiscale Approaches in Modeling Liver Perfusion”) and by another one of our colleague Miroslav Jirik, Ph.D. (“Software Modeling for Liver Perfusion Research”). The whole meeting also helped us determine the direction of future research within the AMTMI project – Application of Modern Technologies in Medicine and Industry supported from European Regional Development Fund (No. CZ.02.1.01/0.0/0.0/17_048/0007280).

The Chaperon project has started
(October 2, 2019)We participate in Chaperon - a Horizon 2020 Widening project of the Faculty of Medicine in Pilsen aimed at boosting the research excellence of the Biomedical Center by hiring a renown expert in cancer genomics.
The Chaperon ERA Chairs project, officially titled “CHAPERON – ERA Chair Position for Excellent Research in Oncology“, has been ceremonially initiated by the Chaperon Kick-off Meeting held on September 26, 2019, at the Biomedical Center, Faculty of Medicine in Pilsen, Charles University.
The guests were greeted by Prof. Milan Štengl, MD, PhD – the coordinator of the project and scientific director of the Biomedical Center. The goals of the project as well as its current status were then introduced by Assoc. prof. Václav Liška, MD, PhD. At the moment, the selection procedure of the ERA Chair holder is in progress and its results should be known by the middle of November. The ERA Chair holder is the key person of the project – this position will be occupied by a renowned expert who will build and lead a new laboratory at the Biomedical Center (Laboratory of Translational Cancer Genomics) and boost the excellence of the Center and the Faculty thanks to his/her excellence and managerial skills.
Members of the Faculty management, our research collaborators from the University of West Bohemia together with other honoured guests then proceeded to a brief tour of the Biomedical Center, its laboratories as well as the experimental animal surgery and intensive care facility. The event was then closed by a networking lunch.

Announcing the Winter Workshop of Visceral Surgery 2020!
(August 27, 2019)For quite some time, we have been getting e-mails asking us whether we are going to open a course similar to SSES also for young clinicians after graduation. Well, the answer is YES as we are now announcing doing exactly that!
We are introducing the Winter Workshop of Visceral Surgery 2020, an intensive surgical workshop for medical residents and veterinarians up to 2 years after graduation. The workshop is going to be held from Monday, February 10 to Friday, February 14, 2020.
Theoretical lectures are going to be more detailed and focused solely on surgery. The hands-on training on pigs will be intense, summing up to a total of 24 hours at the operating theatre over the course of one week.

Renowned experts lectured at the Summer School of Experimental Surgery
(July 15, 2019)Lectures from invited speakers from foreign countries are traditionally a part of the Summer School of Experimental Surgery, which was held for the 6th time this year by our faculty.
The lectures are meant for both professional public as well as medical students. The programme of the summer school has been enriched this year by a speech by professor Uta Dahmen, head of the Department of experimental transplantology, University hospital in Jena (Germany), with her lecture titled Experiment in small animal. The lecture provided an excellent overview of a small animal experiment and it also described the most important results of the department. One of the greatest successes is an experimental decellularization of a single liver lobe in vivo on a surviving rodent model.
A second invited speaker was professor Ajay Goel from the Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas (Texas, USA). Professor Goel is a head of the Laboratory of epigenetics and cancer prevention research, but he represents many other both national and international mainly cancer research related institutions. His lecture about non coding RNAs and their potential as tumor markers in the gastrointestinal tract raised very copious discussion.
Success of the Laboratory of Cancer Treatment and Tissue Regeneration
(July 08, 2019)In July 2019 the team headed by Dr. Pavel Vodicka (Laboratory of Tumor Treatment and Tissue Regeneration at Biomedical Center, Pilsen) succeeded to publish original manuscript: „Relationship of telomere length in colorectal cancer patients with cancer phenotype and patient prognosis” in British Journal of Cancer.
The authors described differences in telomere length between tumor and adjacent mucosa, between tissues from different sites and with different stage. The authors explored association with patient´s survival and situation in metastases and adjacent liver tissue.

AIM: to assess composition of cytotoxic and immune inhibitory cells in precursor tumors to colorectal cancer (adenomas), in colorectal cancer and adjacent healthy mucosa and lastly in metastases. The results will help to understand the role of various immune cells at different phases of tumor development.
Ondřej Brzoň awarded at the Students' Science Conference
(May 21, 2019)Ondřej Brzoň (in the picture second from the right), a student from our team, has won the first prize of the pre-graduate section of the Students' Science Conference of the Faculty of Medicine in Pilsen. Ondřej presented the work "Anaesthesia and intensive care during allogeneous liver transplantation in a big animal" by the authors O. Brzoň, R. Pálek, J. Rosendorf, J. Dejmek, L. Bolek, V. Tégl, L. PhD opportunity in tissue engineering
(April 17, 2019)Project title: Engineering new tissues in vitro using decellularized scaffolds
Supervisor: RNDr. Vladimira Moulisova, PhD
Starting date: 01/10/2019 (with a possibility to delay the start till February 2020)
Project Description: Decellularized organs and tissues represent a very promising material for tissue engineering. After the original cells are gently removed, the remaining extracellular matrix preserved in its native tissue-specific architecture provides a perfect environment for repopulation with new, ideally recipient cells. The project will help to elucidate the detailed structural features of decellularized scaffold obtained from the pig liver. It will also study the cell – scaffold interactions during recellularization experiments with an option to participate on in vivo experiments. A broad range of laboratory techniques will be employed from histochemistry, immunofluorescence, and confocal microscopy across cell and tissue culture to gene expression, proteomics and software analysis. The work will involve an active collaboration with our international partner.
Candidate Profile: The candidate should hold a master degree (MSc, MEng, MD, Mgr, Ing, MUDr…) ideally in tissue engineering, molecular biology, cell biology, or related field. Due to international collaboration good knowledge of English language is welcome. We offer a friendly and supporting environment at a modern institution, a reasonable scholarship and active participation on grant projects.

International collaboration between Biomedical Center and University Hospital in Jena
(November 30, 2018)During the week starting the 29th October 2018, the team of doc. Liška (Laboratory of cancer treatment and tissue regeneration) hosted a scientific visit from Germany.
Prof. Uta Dahmen and dr. Claudia Schindler were both taking part in scientific discussions as well as in practical experiments done as routine activities of the lab. Prof. Dahmen is a head of Experimental Transplantation Surgery group at the Clinic of General, Visceral and Vascular Surgery at the University Hospital in Jena; her research is focused on liver disorders using murine and rat models. Collaboration with the group in Pilsen is being developed mainly in order to study liver decellularization and recellulatization, and thus the visitors also attended a decellularization experiment with porcine liver. Prof. Dahmen also regularly comes to Pilsen as a lecturer for Summer School of Experimental Surgery that is annualy organized by the Biomedical Center.
Surgical suturing course 2018
(November 29, 2018)From November 12 to November 15, a course of surgical suturing was held at the Biomedical Center under the auspices of the Department of Surgery represented by Assoc. prof. Václav Liška, MD, PhD.
This year’s class was the third installment of the course and a total of 107 students took the class in the period of 4 days. Tutored by clinicians from the Department of Surgery as well as by several pre-graduate medical students, the trainees practiced the basics of work with surgical instruments, skin suture and knotting techniques. The students also learned the essentials of suturing materials and needles.
The goal of the course is to provide students with the possibility to exercise practical skills for which there is not enough room in the regular curriculum. The class is held every year in the winter semester as a facultative course for students from 2nd to 5th term.
Spring Pharmacogenomics Meeting at Javorná 2018
(June 10, 2018)From May 25 to May 27 2018 a meeting called «The Contribution of Pharmacogenomics to the Diagnosis and Treatment of Generalized Colorectal Carcinoma IX» took place at a lovely setting of a mountain hut at Javorná.
The meeting was held in a friendly non-formal fashion and a total of 40 researchers from the Laboratory of Cancer Treatment and Tissue Regeneration, Laboratory of Tumor Biology and Laboratory of Pharmacogenomics of the Biomedical Center, and also from the Department of Toxicogenomics (National Institute of Public Health) and Institute of Experimental Medicine (Czech Academy of Sciences) participated at the event. 19 research reports were presented and followed by a lively scientific discussion.
A part of the event was dedicated to the first team meeting of the project UNCE/MED/006: Centrum of Clinical and Experimental Liver Surgery. During the weekend, preliminary results of the featured research were discussed and the course of future work and collaboration was planned. Aside from the scientific program, a hiking trip to the hills of Šumava stimulated the participants on Saturday.
Our book Experimental Surgery has been awarded the Maydl Prize
(April 23, 2018) Last week, our book Experimental Surgery was awarded the Maydl Prize of the Czech Medical Association of J. E. Purkyně. The was originally intended as a textbook for our Summer School of Experimenta Surgery, but grew well past this goal during its creation, so we believe that it can be useful for many medical students and Ph.D. students interested in surgery and biomedical research in general.
